Dead Confederate - The Rat

Yet another talented group out of Athens, Georgia, Dead Confederate puts an interesting spin on the southern rock sound. I recently listened to their album "Wrecking Ball" and was blown away. A few have related them to late Kurt Cobain, which is pretty accurate except they might be a tad more alternative. All the songs on the album are grungy yet pretty - an oxymoron that sounds even better than you'd think. I haven't been this excited about a new southern rock group since Band of Horses' first album. Anyway, I don't know if you'll get a true feel for their uniqueness with just one track, but this one should sum it up pretty well. If you like it, I reccomend "Heavy Petting" (sounds so much like Blind Melon at first - insane) and "The News Underneath."

Chuck Berry

In the 1950s, Chuck Berry crossed more racial, social and creative boundaries in music than our generation will see in a lifetime. He was a true visionary, which is why his half-century-old music sounds just as impressive as it did then. It's authentic and relevant, unlike a lot of the hits you'll hear on the oldies stations today. After listening to a little Chuck Berry, you'll understand where rock n' roll got its heart and soul. Here are a few of the ones I love ....you might recognize "Never Can Tell" from Pulp Fiction.

40 Day Dream - Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

Alex Ebert, the lead of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, is an interesting dude to say the least. Edward Sharpe is actually a character from a book that Ebert wrote. According to Ebert, Edward Sharpe "was sent down to Earth to kinda heal and save mankind...but he kept getting distracted by girls and falling in love." Anyways, Ebert met singer Jade Castrinos in 2005 and formed the band known as Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, which now consists of 10 members. I've never been to a show, but word has it that Ebert, on at least one occasion, has asked the audience to sit indian-style with him for a little while before they start rocking out. Awesome.

Tomorrowland 2010

Sorry for the delay. Thanksgiving break was kind of busy... Anyways, I really want to go to this "Tomorrowland" place, which supposedly exists, although I'm not so sure as I always thought heaven was part of the afterlife. This place looks like absolute mayhem. The techno festival is on the 24th and 25th of July in Belgium. If the fact that it's in Belgium hasn't already made you punt the possibility of attending, the fact that the tickets are already sold out will. How tickets are sold out 8 months in advance is mind-boggling.

Here are the first two songs from the video. There aren't many techno songs that I think would fit well in a Disney movie, but Tim Berg's "Bromance" definitely would...

Shelter from the Storm - Bob Dylan

The album Hard Rain by Bob Dylan was a controversial album in the heyday of Bob Dylan. It was criticized for being "too different" and grungy. Sounds pretty good to me...plus he kinda looks like Jesus.

.

Monster (feat. Jay-Z & Nicki Manaj) - Kanye West

Kanye has been tearing it up lately with his new record label, G.O.O.D. Music. In this newly released track is a bad-ass bitch. Usually female rappers can be a little too vulgar and unsettling (see Lil' Kim). However, at the end of this track, Nicki Manaj shows she can spit some rhymes.

Symphonies (Kill Them With Colour Remix) - Kid Cudi

About 34 seconds into this song, your reaction to it will instantaneously change from "Fuck this shit!" to "Fucking shit!"... I really like how the song starts off so off-beat only to snap together in an instant. This tune rages.

Symphonies (Kill Them With Colour Remix) - Kid Cudi

In case you haven't heard the original version of this song, I've posted it below... I'd say it's one of my favorite songs of the past year. Musical brilliance.

War - Edwin Starr

This tune was originally recorded by the Temptations and included on their 1970 album Psychedelic Shack. They, however, were too afraid to release the opinionated song as a single (pussies) so they passed it off to Edwin Starr. Starr's funky-ass version made it all the way to #1 on the charts. In the following months, Starr was reportedly seen sucking up lines of snow off of stripper's butts and snooping around with the Temptations' ex-girlfriends.

"Every Good Boy" - Derek Trucks Band

Derek Trucks is a living legend to the art of guitar playing. He's won grammies, played with legends like the Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan, and was named one of the top 100 guitar players of all time by Rolling Stone... All by the age of 31. If that doesn't impress you, this song will. His guitar slide accompanied by some organ funk makes for an awesomely creepy blues sound.

Black & Yellow - Wiz Khalifa

Last Monday night (Nov. 8th), Wiz Khalifa was arrested after performing at East Carolina University. He was charges for felonies of possession of marijuana (over 60 grams) and intent to distribute with an additional misdemeanor for drug paraphernalia.

Many think the arrest was prompted by his twitter preceding the show, "Smoke outs Greenville, nc. Fall thru wit ur finest plant." Upon posting $300,000 bail, Wiz showed he learned his lesson by tweeting, "Wakin...bakin...wrists still achin."

Just looking at his mug shot above, I highly doubt there was any intent to distribute, considering that Wiz claims to spend, on average, 10 grand a month on the stinky stuff...

Area Code - Toubab Krewe

Originally from Asheville, NC (when does a Asheville ever produce a bad band), Toubab Krewe is an American instrumental band that fuses the styles of Southern rock with that of Western African music. The band has travelled to Mali several times to play with local musicians. In several West African languages, "Toubab" means foreigner, and "Krewe" is New Orleans' spelling of "crew."

On a separate note, everyone go see Unstoppable. It is awesome.

The Kinks were an English rock band formed by brothers Ray and Dave Davies in 1964. The band is recognized as one of the most important and influential rock acts of the 1960s.5 of their singles made it to the Top 10 on the US Billboard chart and 9 of their albums charted in the Top 40. The Kinks were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. Lead singer John McCauley named the band after he was hiking one day and found a deer tick on his head. Very creative, John. Way to find the symbolism in that one. Deer ticks are funky, nasty little critters and should never be praised (see link). However, these guys can play. They have a nice folk, Bob Dylan-ish style.

Hulaween Show - String Cheese Incident

I always hate reading concert reviews that describe everything as “epic” and “mind-blowing” but after seeing String Cheese Incident perform their first Hulaween show in 4 years this weekend… I’d have trouble describing the experience as anything less. The show was held in the Hampton Coliseum in Virginia, nicknamed “the Mothership” for its space craft-like structure. The venue and the weekend’s space theme created a fitting atmosphere for the out-of-this-world musical experience. Cheese showcased their creative differences with electro jams of Hann/Travis weaved in with Nershi’s bluegrass sounds. At the end of “Rollin’ in my Sweet Baby’s Arms” Nershi says, “gotta love that grasstronica.” And he’s right. They embraced each other’s differences in a way I hadn’t seen on stage before. The camaraderie between them was obvious and it made it all the more special to be a part of. As if that weren’t enough to make the weekend, there was an entire set of space-themed covers, Keller Williams as a surprise guest, dancers, confetti guns and jam after jam infused with imaginative funk. I recommend downloading the entire 2-night show, but here are just a few teasers to get your feet tapping:

“Desert Dawn” String Cheese Incident

“Joyful Sound” String Cheese Incident

“Fly Like an Eagle” String Cheese Incident

“Miss Browns Teahouse” String Cheese Incident

Andrew W.K.

Let's just start by saying this guy is intense, but not in the "I'm going to kill you and your friends" way, more of the let's get bombed and do stupid shit sort of way. He has been around for a while now, and I would be surprised if you haven't heard one of these two songs, but I think it's time for a refresher. Bonesaw recently related to me a tale of his visit to an Andrew W.K. concert (awesome). Apparently, some young skirt tried to get on stage, and security tried to pull her down. Mr. W.K. grabbed her, saying "NO, SHE'S WITH ME" (I have a feeling he only yells). By the end of the show, there was no line between audience and band... if that isn't great, I don't know what is.
