The Gorillaz just dropped a free album via their website (you gotta be a fan club member to download, or you can get it here). Word on the street is it was made entirely with iPad apps, making it the first useful thing an iPad has been used for. Credit goes to Vinsanity Bateman for showing me this. Merry Christmas fools.
Working for a Nuclear Free City is a 4 person band out of the UK. They have been described as "an almost flawless lucid-dream trip through a thousand fantastical influences." Don't about you, but I like the sound of that.

Aloe Blacc is a rapper/soul artist from L.A. He started off as a part of the rap duo, Emanon, but later broke off to do his own thing. He's got a great voice paired with sick rhyming ability. I highly recommend checking out his new soul album Good Times.
As for his name, I don't know if it's from a type of lotion or the British way of greeting a black dude. Ah-low Black, bloody 'ell thas a good nyame!

This shit is nuts. The guy singing is performing what is called Tuvan Throat Singing. It is a type of overtune singing that entails two or more pitches sung over a base-level tone.
It took me a second to understand it, but you will pick up on the recognizable tune if you listen to the high-pitched, almost whistle that is produced. I've watched it several times and it usually takes me until about 1:00 to pick up on the tune.
The Alash Ensemble has performed with Bela Fleck & the Fleckstones several times, which adds a very different dimension to their already insane performances.
Miike Snow is a 2-man producing team from Stockhold Sweden plus American lead singer Andrew Wyatt. Wyatt explained that the group hopes to create "something that is gaudy, bright, shimmery, and the vocals are loud at a time, when it’s really the cool thing to have shit loads of delay on everything and sound psych-avaunt-insightful. I think there is a part of us that is an alternative to that by not having our lyrics be that hard or super coded. I think that there is a certain aspect of being fed up with the faddishness."

The Raconteurs are an American rock band formed in Detroit, Michigan, home of the famed Samuel Grenville Mott. The band consists of four members known for other musical projects: Jack White (of The White Stripes and The Dead Weather), Brendan Benson (solo), Jack Lawrence (of The Greenhornes, Blanche and The Dead Weather), and Patrick Keeler (also of The Greenhornes). Jack White dominates the guitar.

Anthony Hamilton is a modern day Al Green. In fact, a couple years ago they made a track together that could make girls all across the world hot and bothered. Only a select few singers can make females rip their clothes off with a few melodic verses. I think Anthony is climbing that ladder.

Courtesy of Alex Thornton, this vid is bad to the fuckin' bone. Sounds like it's recorded in a studio, but My Morning Jacket leads Jim James (right) and Tom "Two-Tone Tommy" Blankenship (left) are in a moving vehicle. Black Cab Sessions' slogan: "One Song. This was released earlier this week. The album title really does sum it up. The songs on it are a mix of gritty southern rap and a sort of heavy pop. That's kind of been B.o.B.'s style from the start - trying to hold onto his hip-hop following while appealing to the mainstream pop world as well. Some of these songs I really like and some I really don't. Below I've posted probably my favorite song from the album: "Shoot Up the Station" featuring sampling from Santigold. Follow this link to download the entire album.

Yonder is insanely good at what they do, which is typically the hard, up-tempo bluegrass. But it's really refreshing to hear a change of pace from them in this Dead cover. I haven't been able to stop listening to it.. I love the song to begin with, but I think the way they play it is what gets me. The fiddle solo somewhere in the middle is so pretty. It's on the album Jerry Jams for Rex, which is a compilation of Jam bands playing songs for Jerry's philanthropy, the Rex Foundation. It's actually one of the best albums I've gotten in a while, and all the proceeds go to the Rex in Jerry's honor. I definitely reccomend getting it. Anyway hope you like this as much as me - it has all the markings of a Jerry song... sincere, whimsical and friendly.

Interesting and awesome mash-up of Florence and the Machine's "The Dog Days Are Over" with the so-famous vocals of Don McLean's hit "American Pie." The music is subtle enough so as to not overpower the words. In fact, in some sections, the music falls to silence and all you can hear is McLean's awesome pipes. It's perfect.

K'naan grew up amidst the Somalian Civil War and in Somalian ghettos in Toronto, a harsh environment where he lost many friends to murder, suicide, jail-time, and deportation.
It's funny to compare the "gangster" image in America to a 3rd world ghetto "gangster." K'naan phrases it in a way that shits all over 50 cent, T.I., and any other rap star that thinks crack sales were even remotely worrisome.
"All Somalis know that gangsterism isn't to brag about. The kids that I was growing up with [in Rexdale] would wear baggy [track] suit pants, and a little jacket from Zellers or something, and they'd walk into school, and all the cool kids would be like, 'Ah, man, look at these Somalis. Yo, you're a punk!' And the other kid won't say nothing, but that kid, probably, has killed fifteen people."
Ben Drew, whose stage name is Plan B, is a British rapper, singer, songwriter, actor, and film director, thus successfully making me look like a piece of shit. Maclacich is to thank for this one. Deerhunter is an indie rock band from Atlanta, GA. They are most well-known for their lead singer, Bradford Cox (2nd from the right). He looks like a living corpse, only because he has the genetic disorder, Marfan syndrome. He also claims to be asexual, often wears dresses in concert, and smears fake blood on himself.

For those of you who don't know, Tokyo Police Club is an indie-rock group from Canada. They are proof that not all Canadians suck as much as Sydney Crosby. After a week spent in the library, these renditions of "sleepwalk" sum up my mood/general outlook pretty well. Santo & Johnny's instrumental "Sleep Walk" was #1 on the charts in the 1950's. An instrumental on any sort of "hits" chart would be unheard of today... Anyway it's a gorgeous song with a little hawiian flavor to it... probably because they learned to play steel guitar from a guy who had studied music in Hawaii. Steve Kimock Band does a jammy rendition of it, which is one of my absolute favorite covers. And if you're into vocals, definitely check out Modest Mouse's very early but insanely cool "Sleepwalking," a song that was obviously meant to be a re-imagination of the 1950's hit. Impressive stuff.

The Flinstones meet catchy music in the clever approach to the music video of "Circles" by Soul Coughing. Lead singer Mike Doughty kind of sounds like a less-constapated, heterosexual version of Creed's lead singer. Gotta love the funky guitar riff too.

Dr. Dog has a gotten a lot of attention recently for their almost genius approach to pop rock. Its catchy but rugged enough to stay weird. Their slower stuff is really pretty too - vintage and easy-going. Grizzly Bear and Blitzen Trapper take a similar approach so if you like Dr. Dog check them out too. I'm always appreciative of bands that prove this genre hasn't entirely sold out to MTV. Here's one from the new Shame, Shame album.

Bon Iver is an indie rock band formed by indie-folk singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. The band name is a take of the French translation for "good winter." This song, "Skinny Love," is off of the band's debut album, For Emma, which was recorded in a remote cabin in northwestern Wisconsin. I've also included the Das Kapital Rerub of the song which adds some drum and electro flare to it. They are both bad to the bone.
