More Glitch Mob

Just a follow up to flowmingo's post. This mix of Drive It Like You Stole It is on my mind more than video games.

The Ruminant Band - Fruit Bats

This song is from Fruit Bat's last album The Ruminant Band from 2009. Founding member Eric D. Johnson joined The Shins shortly after its release...hopefully that doesn't mean Fruit Bats will dissolve. They sort of remind me of early Dr. Dog and maybe a little bit of Band of Horses. So yeah they had a good thing going. Hopefully we'll hear more from them soon.

The Glitch Mob

I hate to tell you, Glitch Mob, but if you guys couldn't make good music and had to rely more on your fashion style in order to make friends, you probably wouldn't have any. I sure as hell wouldn't bother talking to you at least.

The Glitch Mob is a coalition of 4 famous DJs: Ooah, edIT, Boreta, and Kraddy. They sound a little like Pretty Lights. Oh, and if you plan on going to Bassnectar in Asheville on the 19th like all of the writers at Tune Spoon, The Glitch Mob is one of the opening acts. Here are two of their best:

Shot Yourself In The Foot Again (Extended Mix) - Skream & Example

Skream is one of the first dudes to start putting out dubstep, and he remains on of the best. His role in creating the genre is laid out in the documentary Bassweight. I haven't seen it yet, but it looks pretty money. Example is a English rapper/singer, who has some stuff worth checking out. Anyways, I really enjoy the combination of the two working on the same song.

I think XV is one of the most talented rappers out there. In "SmallVille," he raps over sampling from “To Forgive” by Smashing Pumpkins. Enjoy.

Megafaun

Megafaun started out as DeYarmond Edison in Wisconsin with Justin Vernon. When the band broke up, Vernon started Bon Iver, so the rest of the band became Megafaun. Talk about a supergroup. They're rooted in Americana, but since releasing Gather, Form & Fly in 2009 they've expanded into indie, folk, and even jam approaches that give their sound a really cool edge. Sometimes they're spacey and psychadelic, other times they're straight rock or freak folk. When a band can be that diverse and original, they're bound for greatness. I just got Heretofore, the mini album they released in 2010. It's as soulful and experimental as I'd hoped. Here's "Volunteers" off of Heretofore (notice the lyrics about Carolina breeze. nice.), and a few others from Gather, Form & fly. Hope you like it.

Lindesfarne I & II - James Blake

James Blake is a UK electronic musician/producer that has remained relatively unknown in the US. His upcoming album, James Blake, featuring these two songs is set to release February 7th in the UK.

He carries a music style very similar to Feist, Bon Iver, and Imogen Heap. Check out his earlier cover of Feist's "Limit To Your Love." Pretty dope.

Keep spreading the word about the ole 'Spoon. We love hearing any kind of feedback, positive and negative.

Washed Out

Ernest Greene moved back to Georgia to live with his parents after his first rock-hop project titled Lee Weather failed to take off in Columbia, S.C. in 2009. With the new free time, Greene came up with his “lo-fi“ electronic project Washed Out. The Life of Leisure EP he came out with later that year was unreal. It had a full sound that was unique, laid back and surprisingly catchy. He’s releasing Peach Country, a cassette-only compilation with the Charleston-based label, Mirror Universe. He’ll be performing tomorrow night at Eye Level Art in Charleston. If Peach Country sounds like these songs from Life of Leisure, I think those of us in the area are in for a big night.

Movin' Like Bernie

At first, people were crankin' dat Soulja Boy.
Next, everyone wanted to learn how to Dougie.
Now, here in 2011, everyone's moving like Bernie.

First off, who or what the fuck is Bernie? He must be strung-out 24/7 and walk like he has no spine. Or is he trying to say Barney and he just can't speak. My best guess it's from the widely known movie Weekend at Bernie's 2: The Underwater Treasure.

Secondly, the song is NOT that great. Lucky for WHOEVER made this song (I still don't know), he's probably going to make a lot of money. God knows Soulja Boy has no talent...

Damned - The White Buffalo

Thanks to Big Willie's Bananas for this tune. This guys sounds remarkably similar to Eddie Vedder, lead singer of Pearl Jam. This guy's voice is one-of-a-kind (or two counting Vedder), much like the "Great White Buffalo."

.

Music time machine

It's interesting to see how sampling works in music today. Parliament's "Do that Stuff" was released 1976. Then Norweign electronic duo Röyksopp sampled it in their 2009 single "Happy Up Here" (check the video out, space invaders). The Hood Internet smashed "Happy Up Here" with Wayne's "Comfortable" to yield some dank results. That's pretty neat.

Just Blaze has called Jay a lyrical genius.

My Days - Kids These Days

OK, a few cool things about these kids.

1. They've got a smooth jazzy style.
2. These guys are an 8-piece band consisting of three horn players, a blues-rock trio, a rapper, and a female vocalist.
2. They are all in high school in Chicago.

Shake Me Down - Cage The Elephant

Cage The Elephant is an American rock band from Bowling Green, Kentucky. Since their formation in mid-2006 they have gathered a huge following both in America and the UK. They bring a unique sound and carry out high-energy live performances. Their new song "Shake Me Down" shows a creativity that I'm diggin' the shit out of. Download the tune here.

Cake - Long Time

Cake released their new album Showroom of Compassion today. It's amazing. The single they're pushing right now is "Sick of You" which I think is good, but personally I thought this live rendition of "Long Time" showcased what they did with the album better. The sound quality is really good for a live performance but it's really shaky.. try not to get nauseas.

More Maximum Balloon

I checked out more of Maximum Balloon's album, and I gotta say I'm digging the shit out of it. The album covers more genres than I have ever seen, which makes for an interesting listen. Apartment Wrestling features David Byrne and he crushes, sounds as funky as the Heads with a splash of modern.

I heard this song in a documentary I watched recently and fell in love with it. Air is a pretty cool electronic band because they're not so in-your-face.. a little more low-key. This song is awesome. The piano part is my favorite.

Peaches en Regalia - Phish, 1989

One of my favorite instrumental songs ever is Frank Zappa's Peaches en Regalia. The symphonic original is complex and strange, but of course that would be no task for Phish. They played this one in June of 1989 and I think it's one of the best Zappa covers I've heard in a while. Definitely one that highlights the chemistry between Page and Trey. They played it last December too but the shaky vintage version adds a little more character. I think Trey and Dweezil Zappa (Frank's son) are the only ones who have truly done the guitar melody justice. worrrd up. Hope you like it.

Rhythm Devils - Fountains of Wood

Rhythm Devils are a project by Dead percussionists Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. In an interview with JamBase, Hart said "Our name was bestowed upon us by Garcia. Jerry, in one of his funny moods, said 'you guys are the rhythm devils.'" And he couldn't have been more accurate. Although most of their stuff focuses on the Dead's catalog that they themselves contributed to, they've come out with some really cool original pieces. Anyway this one really blew me away. Not sure if the vocalist is the best addition to the ensemble overall but she adds a little flavor to the song for sure.

Fitz & The Tantrums

Props to Riley O'Shea for showing me these guys. Fitz & The Tantrums are a funk/soul band from L.A. who are just starting to make a name for themselves. They released their debut album Pickin' Up The Pieces in August of 2009. Los Angeles Times music critic Ann Powers wrote, "Fitz & the Tantrums is the kind of band that communicates best in concert, but this album serves as a fine proxy and party-starter." I've posted some a couple of the songs from the album below, but you really need to download the entire album for free here.

Groove Me feat. Theophilus London - Maximum Balloon (Remixes)

Maximum Balloon is the stage name of David Andrew Sitek, who is most known for being a part of T.V. on the Radio. Sitek has only used the name Maximum Balloon for one album (also titled Maximum Balloon), which features Theophilus and other bosses like David Byrne and is worth checking out. Theophilus London (the second), however, is not a stage name. Dude's pretty talented and loves to party like an animal (evident on his blog This Charming Blog). The original version of this song can be found on flowmingo's earlier post

Pen Tapping

This homie's name is Lyrical God and has become increasingly popular on good ole YouTube. This is very reminiscent of 5th grade when we would annoy the shit out of our teachers trying to get the beat to Clipse's "Grindin'" with pens, pencils, and anything else that could make a tapping noise.
