Beardyman

This guys has got raw talent. Not only at live looping, but also at creating some funky funky beats with his kisser. Dude's real name is Darren Foreman and hails from the UK. He came up with his stage name, Beardyman, when he had to quickly come up with one before a show he was opening for. He had a beard at the time and the name stuck. He went from beatboxing to live looping and continues to kick ass. Here's a clip from he recent live performance on Conan.

More Emancipator

Just discovering this guy. His music is bad to the bone yet it also has a relaxing quality to it. Unique stuff. Note that he plays the guitar on top of DJ-ing.

Check these 3 songs out. My two favorite are Maps and Father King.

First Snow (Ooah Remix) - Emancipator

You may recognize Ooah as one-third of the electronic group The Glitch Mob, but Ooah likes to keep things slow and sexy for his solo work, so that's what you get with "First Snow." Shit's Bad-A.

Set You Free - The Black Keys

I'm about to be free. Maybe not as free as that ratty bastard below me (Flowmingo, that looks so tight), but driving 20 hrs alone to Boulder free. Happy trails and one love rastas.

After Midnight (Live on NYE 2009) - Pretty Lights

I can't tell you how extraordinary the Pretty Lights concert was at Hangout Fest. I really wasn't that big of a Pretty Lights fan beforehand, but I have to admit, I was totally blown away. The show was the most energetic, raging show I've ever been to. Afterwards, everyone was sweating so much that they looked as though they had jumped in a pool. The excitement was a product of the magical music he was playing. Although this song is from New Years Eve 2009, he did play it at Hangout, and it was epic. No need to worry about the quality; even though it's live, the quality is great. Listen through 3:05 before you make any judgments.

Speaking in Tongues (feat. David Byrne) - Arcade Fire

Thinking about it now, Arcade Fire and the Talking Heads do share a lot in common. Both have wack-jobs as lead singers. Both are very experimental with their instruments and music. Both give me a superchubby. Enjoy.

STS9 at Hangout

So since Carleton wasn't able to catch the Sound Tribe show this past weekend (thanks to the worst scheduling in festival history) I am MORE than happy to report on their epic set. They opened with this 11 minute Musical Story, Yes that was re-vamped with a dooope bass line.

There's kind of a funny story to go along with this next one. When we were first getting into the Gulf Shores we passed a restaurant called "Arigato Grill" so I took picture of it and sent it to my friends back home saying "could this be an omen?" because it's my favorite Tribe song probably ever. So just imagine my reaction when I heard the "Ok now what the F*CK do you want?!" at the beginning- like I said, EPIC.
(You might want to skip to about 1:45 - and ignore the chatter, I'm shocked people were even speaking at this point, but it's all I could find on youtube)

Zelda Step - Ephixa

I know what you're thinking. More Zelda music? Yes, more Zelda. This time with dubstep flavor. It's actually hands down just good dubstep. More Ephixa to come later, first I gotta graduate, shit.

Back From Hangout Music Fest

Sorry it'a been a while; Abigail and I have been at the 3-day Hangout Music Fest in Gulf Shores, Alabama. It was absolutely epic. The lineup for all three days was incredible. There were 5 stages: 2 on the beach, 2 on the boardwalk, and 1 in an enclosed tent, and with great bands playing on different stages simultaneously, it was impossible to see everything that I wanted to see. But over the course of the weekend I managed to see:

The Easy Star All-Stars
Umphrey's Mcgee
Bassnectar
My Morning Jacket
Widespread Panic
Dead Confederate
Big Gigantic
Pretty Lights
The Flaming Lips
JJ Grey and Mofro
Amos Lee
Drive-By Truckers
Ween
The Black Keys
Paul Simon

I plan on making a post on each of these bands over the next week or two, so stay tuned. Among the bands that I missed and wish I had seen were: Beats Antique, Soja, Warren Haynes Band, STS9, Minus the Bear, Medeski, Martin and Wood, Galactic, and Keller Williams. Lots of music coming...

Gangster - Game (feat. Devin Tha Dude)

There are several people that I would choose to fight over my homey Game. See above picture for details. Pay attention around 0:45 into this song - Game rhymes "mothafucka" with... "mothafucka." So sick. On a more serious note, I am diggin' the line "I've been M.I.A. for a while, then Snoop told me come back n fuck 'em doggy style."

As a bonus, I've included what in my opinion is Game's best tune of all time.

DJ Frane

Trensetter first introduced me to the hypnotic concoction of Halo and Frane. Careful when mixing the two, and be prepared to sit in your room for hours on end. With albums with names such as Journey to the Planet of Birds and Electric Garden of Delights you know exactly what Frane is after (His albums are also subtitled Beats to Blaze to). Frane is talented and creates a trippy atmosphere using electronic beats and quotes from older TV shows. Give it a listen and check his site out.

High For This - The Weeknd

I cannot stop listening to this dude. The Weeknd is completely changing the face of R&B, and is attracting every different kind of listener. His almost rapping style with hardcore lyrics and simple yet haunting beats makes you want to take your clothes off. Quickly.

He has not put out an official video yet, for some teenage dudes put together a pretty sick video. Fat boy has some moves.

He put his whole mixtape up for download so GRAB THAT SHIT. I know I have already posted "The Morning," but it still gets me randy every time I hear it.

Word on the street is his new album, "Thursday," is about to drop soon...

Easy Star All-Stars

I'm seeing Easy Star All-Stars play next weekend at the Hangout Fest, which I'm super excited about. They're best known for their reggae adaptations of famous albums by Radiohead, The Beatles, and Pink Floyd. All the songs keep a close fidelity to the originals, which is crucial to a good cover. But Easy-Star also knows exactly how and where to insert their own dubby flare. Even if you won't be catching them with me next week, definitely check out more of their stuff. Here are a few of my favorites.

Tune-Yards

The tUnE-YaRdS is another bitchin' experimental music project that involves looping music to create sick/nasty/phat/fresh beats. The mastermind behind this project is Merrill Garbus, a folky/electronic performer who rocks a funky get-up every time she performs. She loops instruments such as drums, electric bass, ukelele, and her voice, which sounds more like a wacked-out dude.

In her latest album, w h o k i l l, she gets a little gangster lean goin' and shows her inner thug. Most of it is pretty funny, but don't laugh or she will make you cry.

Motherlover - The Lonely Island (feat. Justin Timberlake)

I know I'm a day late on this, but this video came out on mother's day a year ago. If you haven't already seen it, it's a guaranteed laugh.

Falling Star (R3K Remix) - KiD CuDi

Birdmain may get mad at me for posting this, because Cudi may have done more motivational speaking than performing at the Rites of Spring concert last month for which we were in attendance. That being said, this is not a motivational speech, but a fresh take on the hit "Symphonies" by Cudi and Dan Black.

Next 2 Me - DJ B-ROCK (Feat. Dom P & Hersh)

Some soulful, feel-good hip-hop.

Levels - Avicii

This song has been floating around in the unfinished version under the title "I.D." Here is the finished version of the song, which is now titled "Levels." Several changes are made including the addition of vocals from Pretty Lights' "Finally Moving Remix."

Whatcha Sippin' On - Dj Jewboy

Great mashup by DJ Jewboy. Don't know much about this bro other than his most recent tweet is "Having an exam on a gorgeous day like today is like meeting the girl of your dreams...and finding out her voice sounds like cookie monster." Great analogy jewboy. Hit the "Hulkshare" button to the right of the player for download.

Jazzmatazz - Jay Electronica

There is something about Jay Electronica that makes it seem like he is wiser than any rapper in the game. His rhymes are incredibly clever, but there is an undertone of enlightenment or alien-life or something. It would not surprise me at all if he turned out to be a witch doctor.

Big drums, dreamy vocals, and a weird, dramatic video that captures it all. The video reminds me a lot of the video for "Standing on the Shore" by Empire of the Sun. Sorry, but I can't find a download for this one. Please let me know if you stumble across one.

Washed Out - Eyes Be Closed

Some of you may remember my post about Washed Out I put up back in January. I saw them play here in Charleston a few days after that and got the chance to interview Phil Jones (keys, percussion) after the show, which was a really cool experience. In my review I talked about the show's kinesis and how you could tell they were going somewhere fast. I guess I just didn't know how fast. Only 5 months have passed and Washed Out is now signed with SubPop - one of the biggest indie labels - and are set to release their new EP, Within and Without, this summer. I have to say, I'm really excited to have met these guys and to now see them meet their potential. Here's the first song off of Within and Without.

Washed Out - Eyes Be Closed by LitePanda

Fast Lane (Dirty) - Bad Meets Evil

Round dos.

Dance Yrself Clean - LCD Soundsystem

Even though they are the tits, it's really depressing to post any LCD Soundsystem. They announced that their show in Madison Square Garden on April 2nd would be their last. Big bummer and they don't really have any explanation except, "We are retiring from the game. Gettin’ out. Movin’ on."

This song, even though it's very long, is amazing. If you have ever heard Kid Cudi's "All Talk," the beat actually came from this LCD Soundsystem song. Although the song is almost 9 min long, I still want it to be longer. And it shits all over Cudi's song. I hate you Cudi. You suck and you're going nowhere.

Bon Iver Preview

Untitled from Bon Iver on Vimeo.

So a few weeks ago, Bon Iver randomly posted a 50 sec video, apparently promoting an upcoming album to be released in June this year. If it is anything close to his last album, For Emma, Forever Ago, it's going to be incredible...

Archie Bronson Outfit

The Archie Bronson Outfit is an English rock band based that plays across Europe and the US, producing one Album, Derdang Derdang, that received very good reviews. Both of these songs come from the very same album. They have two others, Fur and Coconut, which I've sampled a bit and approve. I feel like that sound similar to the Keys, but there is just more of them.

Pharoahe Monch dropped a new album in March that is pretty dope. I don't know if you remember Pharoahe Monch, but he was a big name dude in the 90's and is the dude with the song "Simon Says." He's definitely got a different style now, but its pretty bangin'. A little slower but phat nonetheless.

For You (acoustic) - Tigs

The music quality is not very good for this video at all, just warning. BUT I would not be posting this if I didn't think this was worth hearing...and I'm feeling especially sappy today.

Tigs is usually an indie/rocker girl, but she went a little soft on this one. Tigs also sounds like a nasty little critter that you would find crawling around your hoo-has. But it's not. It's Tigs.
